Texas Judge gives 7 year old right to decide custody

Dallas, TX, December 31, 2008

A seven year old boy was at the center of a county courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy had a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Dallas Cowboys, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

George W Bush: He's on his way out (part 2)

My mother responded with this:

“Why not highlight GW's speech on the Thursday after 9/11 from the National Cathedral? What about his great remarks from the rubble of 9/11 when he said "these people who knocked down these buildings will hear from ALL of us soon"?
GW has said one of the greatest regrets of his presidency is that he is not a great speaker and could not articulate his message better.
He has made mistakes no doubt, but he has also kept the country safe for the years following 9/11.”

I’m glad we are safe. Seriously, I think the Bush administration should be wholly recognized for that. I don’t think Bush is an evil guy with nefarious intentions and ambitions for world domination. As far as I know, he’s a guy just trying to win a game of poker with a hand that most would have considered folding before the wagers got too high. He’s chalked full of resolve and he drew his line in the sand. That’s the leadership we needed after the attack on America. I think it’s easy and enticing to Monday-morning-quarterback this administration with 8 years of hindsight under our belts. IMO, he was forced to make made some hard decisions and I’m less than convinced that Al Gore would have delivered what we needed when we needed it. Some of GW’s decisions regarding post 9/11 were spot on and others not so much. But I think it prudent to consider that President’s job is not some 9-5 half-ass butt scratching union gig. That’s why it takes the vote of an entire nation to put a man in that chair. I think GW did what he thought was in the best interest of the American people and for the most part I think he 1)did what was right with the information he had at the time and 2)he took important and sometimes unpopular measures to keep this country safe.

However..

My disagreements beyond terrorism are many. IMO, the Republican congress and this administration were less than fiscally conservative from 2001-2006. I think they pissed off the base and subsequently caused a tidal surge of support for the opposition.

I do think the GW clips in the video are funny and I think GW is the kind of guy who would agree with me.

I think history will be the greatest judge of this administration. Time will tell.

I like this, this and this too

I like that version a lot. The cheesy late 70's feel to it is awesome. BUT...

I like this next version better. Actually, I like the video of the first version and the sound and vocals of the second one.

All this from a guy who ALSO likes this music:

Random Stuff: Part 1

My mother in law was playing with the 3 year old and rhetorically asked, “Where did your mother find you?” The 3 year old responded, “In the closet.”

When the 7 year old was about 4 she was trying to describe how a sock fit on her foot but couldn’t think of the word “toes”. She said, “…and when I put the sock on my…uhhhh….foot fingers, it didn’t fit.”

Guest Bathrooms and Hurt Toes

Half my toenail is purple at the present time. Every step I took today was a steady aide memoire of what happened this morning. For those who don’t’ know, I have a wife and 2 little girls. 3 women in one bathroom is an unconditional train wreck. Naturally, being the odd man out, I was forced to shower in the guest bathroom. So I get my towel, boxers and t-shirt and walk across to the other side of the house to take my shower. I had to fish out about 24 toys from the bottom of the empty tub. I then noticed that there was no soap and about 2 drops of strawberry scented children’s shampoo. So I walked there and back across the house to get these essential toiletries. I turned the water on, did my thing and dried off.
I got dressed and walked on the double to the master bedroom to gather the rest of my clothes for the day. Our bedroom was a mess this morning; dirty towels, discarded sleep shirts and shoes besieged the wood floor. I was walking at a quick pace because 1) it was cold and 2) we were sort of running late. Halfway across the bedroom floor, I slam my right big toe into a ten pound dumbbell in front of the TV. I quickly picked it up and said a few strong words at an easy to hear volume. Sharon stuck her head around the door frame from the master bath and asked, “What’s your problem?” I said, “I just hit my foot on this dumbbell.” She laughed and asked, “The one in front of the TV? I did the exact same thing earlier this morning”.
