Obama Voters Helped Pass Prop 8

In a previous post I explained that:

"Proposition 8 was a " a California State ballot proposition that would have amended the state Constitution, to limit marriage to unions between a man and a woman, and thus overturn a recent California Supreme Court decision that had recognized same-sex marriages as a fundamental right. The official ballot title language for Proposition 8 was, "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry". On the day after the election, the results remained uncertified. With 100% of precincts reporting, the vote was 52.47% in favor of Proposition 8 and 47.53% against, with a difference of about 504,000 votes; as many as 3 million absentee and provisional ballots remain to be counted. The organizers of the "No on Prop 8" campaign conceded defeat on November 6, issuing a statement saying, "Tuesday’s vote was deeply disappointing to all who believe in equal treatment under the law." (Source: Wikipedia)"

I also said that I was for gay marriage.

Unfortunately, many of the enlightened and progressive Obama voters do not agree with me as evidenced by what happened last Tuesday in California.

A recent article in the SF Chronicle said:

California's black and Latino voters, who turned out in droves for Barack Obama, provided key support for a state ban on same-sex marriage. Christian, married and older voters also helped give the measure the winning edge, according to exit polls for The Associated Press.

How did the California election numbers break down in California?

Here goes...

Obama got 6.3 million votes

McCain got 3.7 million votes.

5.4 million voted FOR prop 8 (against gay marriage)

4.9 million voted AGAINST prop 8 (for gay marriage)

The margin of the prop 8 vote WAS ONLY 1/2 A MILLION VOTES!!!!

According to the data from the CNN exit poll, 36% of democrats voted for prop 8. Therefore, Obama supporters helped pass this. Considering that there were 6.3 million Obama supporters, 36% is 2.2 MILLION people.

Apparently the Obama supporters actually believed the pro-discrimination-against-gays views of Biden and Barack. It shouldn't be too shocking because these Obama voters where just going along with the views of the candidates for whom they were voting.

here are a few quotes:

Although Barack Obama has said that he supports civil unions, he is against gay marriage. In an interview with the Chicago Daily Tribune, Obama said, "I'm a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."

Ifill then asked Senator Biden: “Senator, do you support gay marriage” “No. Neither Barack Obama nor I support redefining from a civil side what constitutes marriage. We do not support that,” answered Biden.

I hate that prop 8 passed but I love the Irony:

HOPE and CHANGE ...but not if you happen to be gay.

2008 Presidential Election Shatters All Records (not really)

Remember when the press kept saying that there would be a record turn out for the Presidential election this year? The implication was that there would be a lot of young voters who would be voting for Obama.

Turns out...not really the case compared to 2004.

Obama: 63,444,462
McCain: 56,126,680

Things that Irritate Part 2: "I could care less"

It drives me crazy to hear this phrase: "I could care less."

Stop and think about this for a minute. If you could care less that means you care about something. What you mean to say is that you COULDN'T care less. Meaning, that carrying any less than you already do would be impossible.

This one really chaps my ass.

Things that Irritate Part 1: Sabbatical

Why do Christians use this word when they really mean "vacation"? It always bothered me. It's as if "vacation" sounds so secular (hold your nose as you say that word). It's as if everything has to have the appearance of a grand spiritual meaning behind it.

Just chill out...take a few days off...recharge....pray if you want/don't pray if you don't want...and come back home when you are done. Don't try to fool all of us by making it sound like you are Kwai Chang Caine from Kung Fu, traveling the Earth in and endless search for Truth.

It just grinds on my nerves.

First, if there was a state who I thought could have pushed through gay marriage, it would have been California. This has to be disappointing to the millions of gay people in America today.

Second, I personally can't think of one good reason why gay people shouldn't be allowed to enjoy the same rights as their straight counterparts. I don't see what is the big deal here.

Third, support for this bill came largely from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons). I find this to be pregnant with irony.

If there was one group who could understand what it's like to be discriminated against because of their non-traditional ideas of marriage--it would be them. Who else but former polygamists!?!

Pot calls Kettle black...and Pot wins.

This time.

Why I Think McCain Lost

He blew it with the bailout. He had been saying for 2 months, "when these pork bills come across my desk I will veto them and I will make the authors famous..you will know their names".

Then what did he do?

He ran down to Washington like a dumbass and voted for the biggest pork bill of all time...the "bailout".

All he had to do was NOT vote for it or vote against it. The stupid thing would have passed. It had 70 senators voting for it. They didn't need McCain.

Then, he could have kept his moral high-ground with government waste and possibly pulled some libertarian support. Instead, he made himself look like a Bush "yes man" and went right in step with the democrat leaders of the house and senate. It was a complete derailment.

He had the perfect opportunity to show the country that he wasn't like Bush. The he was different than the status quo in Washington. He had the perfect opportunity to show that he is a man of his word and that he stands up for what is right. Also, voting against it would have distanced him from some of the blame for the bailout. It would have made it look like he wasn't the cause of it.

I think the majority of Americans assumed that the Republicans were responsible for the "credit crisis" (cue scary music). McCain never did recover from that point on. He was running a pretty close race until then.

JMO...not that it matters at this point.

Republicans have to do a lot better than that if they want to win in 2012.

1 Ballot and 4 Donuts

I woke up at 5:30 AM CST. I checked in on a few websites and watched the second quarter of Monday Night Football from last night while I ate breakfast. I kissed the wife goodbye as she left for work about 6AM. Then, at about 6:15, I got the kids up and got them all dressed for the day. I told them we were going to vote and if they were good I'd buy them some donuts.

They agreed.

I arrived at my precinct polling place at about 6:45AM. There were 5 people standing in line outside of the building. We hurried out of the car and jumped in line. In the next 15 minutes, the line grew behind us by about 20 people.

At about 7:02AM, they opened the doors and we all made our way into large open community center. We formed a single file line. The check in process was slow. It took another 10 minutes to process the 5 people in front of me. I'm so glad I showed up early. (By the time I left it was about 40 people long and this was at 7:15)

I got checked in and made my way to a booth. It was a paper ballot with a pen to fill in your selections in bubbles to the left of the candidate's name. I skipped the first square that gave the option for a straight ticket. I skipped the presidential election box. The next box was for US Senator. I couldn't bring myself to vote for a democrat although I entertained the notion for a few weeks. I couldn't vote for the Republican John Cornyn because he voted for the trillion dollar bailout bill. So, I voted Libertarian.

I voted L's and R's on the state officials. Then it was time to go back and fill in something for President. I couldn't vote for Obama. If anything, because he voted for the bailout bill. I couldn't vote for McCain because he voted for it too. I wasn't inspired by Bob Barr so I didn't want to vote for him by default.

So....

I did what I said I was going to do 6 months ago: I wrote in Ron Paul. (forgive me mother)

BTW, we got donuts on the way home and they ate them up before school started while watching Imagination Movers. 2 glazed and 2 chocolate....gone in 60 seconds.
